Should You Have a Divorce Party?

  • One of the latest trends is to celebrate your divorce with a party. While years ago people might have had a subdued drink with friends when the divorce decree came in the mail, today more and more people are planning elaborate divorce parties. The idea behind a divorce party is that you are celebrating the end of an unhappy marriage and the beginning of a new life. Those are definitely two things to feel positive about, however many divorce parties can be huge, over the top affairs, similar to a wedding in scale. Many divorce parties feature cakes that illustrate the situation with humor. Some people hold a divorce shower, asking friends to bring gifts to help them restock their household after property division, or to bring items to help them kick start a new single lifestyle. While most divorce parties are all in good fun, there are a few things to keep in mind:
  • The budget. If your financial situation after divorce is tenuous, you’ll want to be careful what you spend on a divorce party.
  • The date. Don’t schedule your divorce party until you are actually divorced. If things get out of hand it could be used against you in your divorce.
  • Your ex. It’s tempting to turn the party into an event that focuses on bashing your ex. If you have children together, this could backfire and hurt your children.
  • Your emotional state. What sounds like a night of good fun could end up being emotionally difficult if you are still processing the divorce. You also need to consider your emotional state when considering entering into any kind of dating relationship, whether casual or long-term.
