Angry Mothers and Angry Fathers

Parents arguing and a child covering her earsGrowing up with angry parents

Growing up with angry parents can create a difficult environment for everyone in the household. Anger makes the household unpleasant at times. This type of environment can make things hard outside of the home as well. Children can struggle in school, with friends and during extracurricular activities such as sports, when living with angry parents.

What is irritable mom syndrome?

Irritable mom syndrome is often referred to as mom rage. “Mom rage is a phenomenon in which mom‘s experience intense anger that is unexplained, intense, and often very disruptive to their daily life.” explains Carli Blau, a psychotherapist certified in perinatal mental health from New York as quoted in, “What is mom rage and when is it a sign of a mental health issue?” featured in PsychCentral on May 20, 2022.

The effects of growing up in an angry household with an angry mother and an angry father

In Psychology Today in an article posted on August 4, 2022, “How anger rules over some families… and how everybody suffers as a result,” Sarah Epstein LSMT states that growing up in a home with an angry parent can create long-term issues, including conflict aversion, an inability to process emotions, and stress. “When mom has anger issues, it impacts everyone in the household, just as growing up with an angry father does.

“Controlling your anger as a parent,” as featured in Psychology Today, suggests that parents get angry if they are sleep deprived or if their children are misbehaved often causing stressful situations. Outside stressors can also cause angry mothers and angry fathers. The article points to the development of both social and emotional difficulties, and suggests that children who have angry mothers and angry fathers will have a higher risk of mental health problems in the future.

Seek out a mental health professional who can help you navigate your circumstances. Not every situation requires litigation. Not every family dynamic needs to be resolved in a divorce. A mental health professional can help you to attempt to control your anger issues as well as navigate how to reduce the impact that it is having upon your children. Mental health professionals can provide resources and suggest ways to manage stressors that can cause anger issues. Support groups and one on one therapy sessions can prove beneficial when managing anger and its causes and consequences when it becomes a chronic problem.
