The 3 Hardest Things to Accept About Your Divorce

As you get ready to go through the divorce process, there are several things you need to accept that you may not want to.

  1. Nobody Wins. Nobody ever walks away from a divorce with every single item on their wish list and a skip in their step. Divorce is about tough decisions and complex financial arrangements. With a good attorney and a reasonable outlook, it is likely you will come away with most of what you need to move forward with your life.
  2. Compromising May Be Best. If you are still feeling very angry and hurt, you may be focused on having a judge vindicate you or you may even feel you are out for some measure of revenge. The best way to come out of divorce with a plan that will work for you in the coming years and a reasonable relationship with your ex that is civil is through a cooperative process such as mediation or collaborative law. By customizing your settlement and your parenting plan, you will get the outcome that most directly fits your needs.
  3. The Past Doesn’t Matter. It is easy to get caught up in things your ex said or did, but for the most part none of this really matters. The only exceptions to this are when it comes to parenting and then only will huge egregious misbehavior really matter. Your ex may have been truly awful to you, but this does not matter to the judge. You are better to focus on the future and creating an outcome that will benefit you the most in the days to come than on what happened in the past.
